What is Hyaluronic Acid (HA)?
Hyaluronic acid is a special mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body. One of the most heavily researched substances in medicine today with thousands of clinical trials mostly in the fields of orthopedics and cosmetic surgery. Its function in the body is, amongst other things, to bind water and to lubricate movable parts of the body, such as joints and muscles. Its consistency and tissue-friendliness allows it to be used in skin-care products as an excellent moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules in nature and can be described as "nature’s moisturizer".
Why is Hyaluronic Acid so important to the skin?
Young skin is smooth and highly elastic because it contains high concentrations of Hyaluronic Acid, which helps skin stay healthy. As we grow older, the body loses its ability to maintain this same concentration in the skin. Hyaluronic acid helps to bind water, the ability of the skin to retain water also declines with age. As a result, the skin becomes dry and loses its ability to restore itself. Without water, the spaces in the skin appear which leads to wrinkling and the older skin appearance. Hyaluronic acid acts as a space filler by binding to water and thus restoring normal skin health.
How long has Hyaluronic Acid been used?
Hyaluronic acid was first used commercially in 1942 when Endre Balazs applied for a patent to use it as a substitute for egg white in bakery products. He went on to become the leading expert on HA, and made the majority of discoveries concerning HA. Hyaluronic acid has long been used in some of the top selling commercial skincare products, however, due to its high cost, it was only used in small concentrations.
Because it is an acid will it burn my skin?
Hyaluronic acid is often called an acid and this is a misnomer. Hyaluronic acid as a sodium salt (sodium hyaluronate)(Episilk™) will have a neutral pH measurement not an acidic. Because of the water retention capacity of hyaluronic acid, it is actually very good for skin health.
Do doctors use Hyaluronic acid to help their patients?
The answer is yes. Most of the work has been done in the field of orthopedics, eye surgery and cosmetic surgery. Recently the FDA has approved the injection of Hyaluronic acid directly into the facial area for wrinkle reduction. The hyaluronic acid acts as a space filler underneath the skin. This treatment is quickly replacing the Botox™ and collagen injections that have long been used. It has been applied topically to wounds or severe burns to promote rapid skin growth and reduce scarring.
Are there any clinical studies that have been done with Hyaluronic Acid?
Yes, Hyaluronic Acid has been one of the most heavily researched subjects over the past 20 years with many clinical studies in the field of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Click here to review.
Why is the Episilk™ Hand & Body Lotion formulation superior to others?
We formulated the product around the feedback from our customers. Our customers wanted a product that would be free of harmful ingredients. These harmful ingredients are even known to cause various forms of skin cancer. We answered them by making Episilk™ Hand & Body Lotion 100% all natural with no known harmful ingredients. Our customers wanted a lotion that would help to retain skin moisture. We answered them by adding Hyaluronic Acid, the best known humectant (moisturizer) we knew of. It has been known to hold up to 1000 times it weight in water. We not only added HA, but we added it in high enough concentrations to be effective. Not only did we add HA, but we have formulated with other highly beneficial ingredients that also support skin health. Today, our satisfied customers are thanking us for listening to them.
What are the directions for use with Episilk™ Hand & Body Lotion?
After cleansing in the morning and/or evening, massage small amounts to the hands and body. Due to its ability to cover a large area using only small amounts, the 8oz. bottle will last approximately 2 months. As with all body lotions, proper storage in a room temperature environment is necessary to assist with preservation of the ingredients.
